On August 31, 2014, Fate Reforged was presented as part of the Wizards of the Coast panel at PAX Prime. It contains 185 cards (10 basic lands, 70 commons, 60 uncommons, 35 rares and 10 mythic rares), with premium versions of all cards randomly inserted. As the huge sets of the block symbolize alternate histories, the expansion symbol of the set is a stylized image of two opposing planes or universes.

This middle set, representing the past, serves as a precursor to both. The set had to be designed to work mechanically with both Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir.

Five new clans were also introduced in Fate Reforged:

The Abzan Houses (White, Black, Green) are led by Daghatar the Adamant, an aloof and analytical leader. They hold Dromoka, the Eternal, in high esteem. In the past, they used a feature called "Bolster", which allowed players to upgrade their weakest monsters.
The Jeskai Way (Blue, White, Red) is led by Shu Yun, the Silent Storm, who strives to preserve knowledge. They worship Ojutai, the winter soul. They preserve the mechanism of efficiency.
The Sultai Brood (Black, Green, Blue) is led by Tasigur, the Golden Fang, a lazy and spoiled prince. Silumgar, the driving death, is worshipped by them. The Delve mechanism is still in use.
The Mardu Horde (Red, White, Black) is led by Alesha, who smiles at Death, a transsexual warrior who has managed to negotiate an equal position for her clan. Kolaghan, the fury of the storm, is revered. Previously, her mechanic was Dash, which allowed players to cast creatures for less mana, but with the caveat that the creature had to be returned to the hand at the end of the turn.
The Temur Fronts (Green, Blue, Red) are led by Yasova Dragonclaw (all Temur Khans bear the title "Dragonclaw"), Sarkhan Vol's first friend in the past, who dreams of a world where the people of Tarkir no longer fall prey to dragons. Atarka, the world changer, is worshipped by them. They continue to use the mechanism of the Cruel Ones.
